How to Find Windows 10 Update Logs and Read using PowerShell

With the release of Windows 10, Microsoft has changed the way, this operating system logs being created and then how to view them. Till now, we have been viewing Windows Logs of previous versions operating system in Windowsupdates.log file. However, this file is still present in Windows 10, but when you open it, it'll not show you logs, rather you'll find following information in it:

[crayon-55d5bea9c7c03064477282/]

How to Find Windows 10 Update Logs and Read using PowerShelll

So, while Microsoft has done so many changes in Windows 10, they totally transformed the way, we may peak into Windows Update logs. So, in order to view WindowsUpdate.log in Windows 10, there are two ways:

  1. Decoding Windows Update ETL files
  2. Using Windows PowerShell cmdlet to re-create the WinodwsUpdate.log, like it has been in previous versions of Windows

For Windows 10, using PowerShell is the best way to view Windows Logs, but is less reliable. Hence, we have prioritized the solutions below:

Solution 1 (Takes more time than Solution 2)

Using this method, you can directly decode Winodws Update .etl files in human readable form for getting the windows update information during various troubleshootings. So, here's the steps to do it:

  • First you need to download public symbols from here and copy it to following path:
[crayon-55d5bea9c7c20416686397/]
  • You can open above location by copying this path to "Run" dialog box and enter.

Windows 10 Kit & Tools

Installing Windows 10 Kit

  • Now locate "Tracefmt.exe" by using Windows Search and copy it to following path:
[crayon-55d5bea9c7c2d921747372/]

Where %systemdrive% is your operating system drive e.g. C:\. If WULogs folder is not available, create one.

  • After copying "Tracefmt.exe", Right click on Start menu and select "Command Prompt (Admin)".
  • Run following commands in "Command Prompt".
[crayon-55d5bea9c7c39409217393/]

Where <Winodw Update Logs> syntax would be replaced by Windows Update .etl files name. You can list all files name in one command like below:

[crayon-55d5bea9c7c43650821415/]

This would generate a combined WinodwsUpdate.log file for you.

Solution 2

  • Open start menu and type "powershell" and on result of "PowerShell ISE", right click and select "Run as Administrator".

Windows 10 PowerShell ISE

  • PowerShell can take a while to open if running first time. Run following command in PowerShell:
[crayon-55d5bea9c7c4e419749547/]
  • This process can take a while to complete, so be patient. Once it's complete, you'll find a similar screen as below.
Powershell Windows 10 update

Open your desktop, you'll find a new file named WindowsUpdate.log.

Also on Trouble Fixers

Now, the file WindowsUpdate.log generated using command Get-WindowsUpdate.log is a static file and we need to get it into terms of auto-updating, so that you don't have to update the whole procedure of running the PowerShell again and again. To accomplish that, you can create a script using PowerShell which shall auto-update the log file with recent activities, so that you may could troubleshoot things in real-time if doing any.

For creating a script, commands in PowerShell could be something similar as below:

[crayon-55d5bea9c7c5c180886039/]

For more details visit, Get-WindowsUpdateLog method, which shall help you in merging Windows udpate .etl files into a sinlge WindowsUpdate.log file.

Windows 10 Will Automatically Disable Pirated Games or Softwares

Windows 10 might be the first version of Windows which shall breakthrough how you may use your computer or How Microsoft have the power now to control things inside your computer. While Microsoft is pushing hard Windows 10 upgrade to users worldwide for free, just because this operating system would be pitched later on as a service rather than a stand-alone software product. But even "Free" has a "Fee" word hidden inside it. So, my dear friend, nothing is "Free" rather Microsoft in Windows 10 changed their End User License Agreement (EULA) which allows Microsoft to remotely disable or delete Pirated Games and Pirated Software's form your computer.

Do you know why Microsoft don't allow stopping automatic updates in Windows 10? It's just because that could hamper the way Windows 10 is designed. Now Windows 10 has the power of checking automatically the version of your software's and download updates for them or even making configuration changes without requiring any user intervention. And these configuration changes can include preventing you from accessing some services, playing counterfeit games and even using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices.

Windows 10 Will Automatically Disable Pirated Games or Softwares

Now such reasons makes sense when Microsoft offered Windows 10 as a upgrade to users who're already using pirated copies of Windows 7 or Windows 8. Those people can upgrade their computer to Windows 10 too, the only difference is that the OS shall keep reminding the users that it's not a genuine copy. However there won't be any difference in functionality of operating system.

How Microsoft Shall Find If I Am Using a Pirated Game or Software?

While Microsoft has not made it clear yet, how they're going to determine if you're running a pirated software or game? Although another worth noting point is, if Microsoft shall publicly tell users how they're going to determine, probably users shall find a crack to stop Microsoft from doing any intervention in their computers. However it won't be difficult for Microsoft to check if you're accessing services of Steam through illegal ways or probably using a pirated anti-virus copy. Might be many keygens would see their end in making changes in System files of operating system to crack the software's.

Also Microsoft would monitor what type of Hardware you're using. Although it's difficult to say, How that would benefit Microsoft in anyway, but for one thing i am sure that this game is going to be interesting and there's a lot more to come and discover in Windows 10. Another notable point is when Microsoft has started, will Apple join the league by updating the EULA with similar terms, however Apple has no issues currently in running any pirated software on it's desktop platform i.e. OS X.

Has Time Arrived to Get Rid of Pirated Games?

Although Windows 10 is expanding across various types of devices like phones, tablets, notebooks, desktops, game consoles, wearables and a lot more types, hence even if you've upgraded already to Windows 10 and has your software's and games installed, there is yet a long time before Microsoft would start taking any action. Right now, Microsoft is more focused in fixing comparability issues of Windows 10 across the different types of hardware's.

Also on Trouble Fixers:

As per by belief, until Microsoft starts pitching Windows 10 services to users, there is no point to worry about using any kind of Software or Games. We will update, if we hear something from Microsoft regarding deletion or disabling of Pirated Software's or Games.

Windows 10 Will Automatically Disable Pirated Games or Softwares is a post first appeared on Trouble Fixers.

Stop Hackers to Steal Your Identity Details from Facebook

Do you know that digi-crims can scan the whole population even to a country level to find their targets. This is a claim made by security research firm "Salt Agency". They recently figured out, how hackers are exploiting an overlooked feature of Facebook by gathering personal data from them and the user shall never knew about it.

Stop Hackers Steal Your Facebook Data

How Hackers Steal Facebook Data

If you have ever reviewed your Facebook Privacy Settings at this link: http://ift.tt/1J3sr4f, you'll find settings of "Who can look me up?" or "Who can look up using the phone number you provided?" which is by default set to "Everyone".

Facebook Privacy Settings

Now, making small changes in these settings can make a big difference in protecting your privacy. Wondering how hackers take advantage of these overlooked settings?

Salt Agency showed, how with a simple trick, they were able to link thousands of phone numbers with Facebook accounts.

This is a security flaw in Facebook which led hackers to gather Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of millions of Facebook users with First and Last names, locations, images and many more just using a phone number.

That Security agency used a script to generate random phone numbers by combining every possible parameter used in US, Canada and Britain.

Now, When they have millions of phone numbers of users, they link those phone number via Facebook's Application Programming Interface (API) which is freely available via developers.facebook.com and anyone can make one API by registering themselves as a developer. Now, they linked those phone numbers with Facebook API to gather Facebook's user ID of the associated user.

Now, once they have the users' ID, they can extract more information about them using API like:

  • First and Last Name
  • Phone number (they already have)
  • Profile Picture
  • Phone Model they use
  • Version of Facebook app they're using
  • Identify whether push notifications is enabled or not

Here's a quote by them for this security flaw:

"With this security loophole, a person with the right knowledge can harvest the non-private details of the users who allow public access to their phone numbers, enabling the harvester to then use or sell the user details for purposes that the user may not be happy with."

Such security flaw has led Hackers to steal information of till now 1.5 millions users of Facebook. Even the security agency alerted Facebook about the issue and requested them to make changes in API by turning-ON pre-encryption.

Yet, Facebook has not taken any action to fix the flaw, leaving millions of users identity data unsecured to the hackers. And Facebook is not bothered to fix the flaw as they don't think that anyone could exploit or abuse their vulnerability.

Also on Trouble Fixers:

However, Facebook Security Team does gave a statement, that they continuously monitor and mitigate if someone may try to abuse the API. They also said, that they have strict parameters how a developer could use their API's and limit the usage as soon as if someone goes against the defined rules or parameters.

How to Stop Hackers to Steal Your Identity Details from Facebook

Till the time, Facebook make some changes to prevent such abuse, you can do your part to stop this abuse immediately. Here are few steps to protect your Privacy:

  • Set your Phone Number Privacy to "Only Me"
    • Go to Your Profile > About > Contact and Basic Info > Click on Your Mobile Phone Number.
    • Now click that gear icon just below phone number, and select "Only Me".

facebook phone number privacy

  • Another change is required in Privacy settings, which can be accessed via this url: http://ift.tt/1J3sr4f and change settings of "Who can look me up? or "Who can look up using the phone number you provided" to "Friends" only.

Facebook Privacy Settings

If you think how can a hacker benefit from such data, just think the he could sell that personally identifiable information (PII) database to any organization which is into illegal activities, just for earning good money and because of that user life could be in danger without any knowledge to them.

Sometimes email containing meeting information when sent to a SIP address in OneNote 2013 using the Email page function or Share with Meeting feature fails to deliver to assigned address. Such issue occur when you don't have Lync 2013 (Skype of business) installed or other reason could be that the SIP address differs from the SMTP address.

So, the best solution for this issue is as follows:

First make ensure that you have KB3055001 update for Office 2013 installed in your computer.

  • Close all Microsoft applications like Microsoft Office or Skype or any app. This is important.
  • Press Windows key + R.
  • When "Run" dialog box opens, type "regedit" and enter.
  • When Registry Editor opens, locate following path:
[crayon-55cf50c96c895817454019/] OneNote registry
  • Open "Edit" menu and select New and choose DWORD value.
  • Type in MeetingEmailSmtpOverride and press Enter.
  • Now, in details pane, click MeetingEmailSmtpOverride and then click Modify.
  • Enter any non-zero value e.g. 1 and then click OK.

What above steps does, that the settings we just did in registry would force the Outlook-OneNote integration to use SMTP settings only and shall ignore the SIP addresses from now. If you don't have registry access, or can't find one, then you can enforce same settings by setting value of msoridCUOneNoteMeetingSmtpOverridesSip group policy as appropriate.
